Car Pooling: Is it Right for Me?

With the high cost of gas these days and the need to save money wherever we can, many people are considering joining a car sharing group, and you may be one of them. You may be thinking about joining a car pool, but you may also be wondering if car sharing is right for you. After all, there are other ways to save money going to work, like biking or taking the bus. So how do you know if car pooling is the right option?

The biggest factor for you to consider in making this decision is how well you get along with other people. Clearly, car sharing will require you to make some sacrifices. First of all, you need to be able to work with the schedules of 4 or 5 other people. This could be a challenge if you find you need to wake up an hour earlier every day to accommodate the rest of the group.

Another thing to think about is if you have the same tastes as the people you will be riding with. This is important because you may not like some of their habits, like the radio station they listen to, the kind of things they like to talk about, etc. Before joining any car pool, you better make sure you know the people well enough to know if you will be compatible with them.

So, if you are a flexible person and get along well with others that may even have different tastes than yours, then car pooling might be a great option for you. On the other hand, if you value your privacy and are more particular about your tastes, then you may want to look at other ways to save money on your daily commute-like riding your bike or taking the bus to work.

Challenges of Car Pooling

Car pooling or car sharing is a great concept in many ways. It’s great for the environment as carbon emissions and fuel consumption are reduced. It saves a lot of money for car poolers as costs of fuel, maintenance and car insurance get divided among the group. Car pooling goes a long way in reducing traffic congestion, especially during peak traffic hours, leading to better road safety and also saves time otherwise spent stuck in a traffic jam. Yet, despite all these advantages, car pooling or sharing is not as popular as it should be. The root of this lack of enthusiasm for car pooling can be seen in the kind of challenges that it faces.

Car pooling is not always a joy ride. There can be quite a few complications in getting the right car sharing set up. People who are planning to share a car have to agree on several points. These include:

1. Will a single person drive all the time or will the other commuters take turns?

2. Will the driver pick up the commuters individually from their home or workplace, or will the commuters manage to gather at the driver’s home or meet up with the driver at a common location?

3. What happens if the driver fails to show up on an occasion? Does he reimburse travel expense to the commuters?

4. How are the car poolers going to tackle changes in office timing or when someone has to do overtime or gets delayed?

5. How acceptable is it for a commuter to ask to be picked up from a different location once in a while?

6. Will changes in fuel costs immediately affect car pool charges?

These are just some of the questions that need to be sorted out and agreed upon by all the commuters before they can start car pooling or sharing.

A Brief Look at car2go: Mobility Concept

Car sharing and car pooling have become extremely popular over the past few years. As the price of gas goes up, people are going to look for alternatives to how they drive and when they use their car.

One of the new popular concepts of people who are looking for ways to help the environment and use a car occasionally is that of car sharing when they need it. These people live in busy cities that the majority of the time do not call for having a car. Everything can be done by walking to the nearest store, the corner or using public transportation. However, there are some things such as moving, business meetings and other important events where a car is needed. That’s where programs like the car2go program comes in.

The car2go is a program that is starting in Austin, TX. It is very similar to that of the Zipcar service. People pay a membership fee that allows them to have access to rental cars. The difference is that these rental cars have places that are all over the city. They are parked all around and when a person wants to use the car they just head to the website and add some credits for the time that they are going to use the car. They use the car and then drop it off at one of the many locations that are for the car2go program.

This program allows you to use a car when you want and not have to pay extremely high fees for using it. They have daily rates as well as hourly rates that can help save money for a person who is looking for it.

Long gone are the days where all you could do is rent a rental car for a huge fee for a daily or weekly rate. Consider renting by the hour with car2go.

Traveling can be an extremely stressful time. There’s having to make sure that you are at the airport in time, worrying about the plane tickets and just the stressful emotions that come with flying in general. The last thing that a person needs to worry about is driving to the airport and finding a parking spot in the whole area.

Here are some of the great benefits of using a car sharing service for your trip to the airport.

Avoid High Parking Fees. Parking a car in the overnight parking lot in the airport can cost hundreds of dollars and that’s as long as there are no unexpected delays on your trip. By car sharing you are able to avoid the fees that are associated with parking your car and can save some extra money.

Avoid the Stress. Traveling is stressful and most people start getting nervous when they have to fly. By having someone else drive you to the airport you take the worry about having to drive there, getting there in time and all the stress that comes with driving.

Save on Gas. Gas prices are rising every day. You can save money on gas by doing a ride share to the airport. It prevents you from having to use your own gas and not have to worry about the rising costs of getting to the airport.

Help the Environment. The less cars that are on the road the better for the environment it is. By sharing the ride to the airport you are making it so that there is one less car on the road which can help the environment greatly.

Some of these benefits are what makes taking a car sharing service to the airport great. Take a lot of the stress off of you, prop your feet up and you’ll be at the airport in no time at all.

Craigslist: The New Car Pooling Meet Up

Think about how you find your car pooling options. Do you leave it to the others at work? A bulltin board in the break room? Another car pooling company? Or maybe you go to Craigslist to find various car pools. The fact is that over the past few years, the way that car pooling has been arranged has changed.

In the past, car pools were left up to companies or individuals to find their own ride. This left very little options as to who they could car pool with, where the car pool would go and what times the car pool would leave at. This was problimatic to those that might have lived out of the area or worked on a different schedule then the others in the car pool. However, an alternative has been found for those type of people.

With the advent and populartity of the Internet people have started to turn to various websites to find car pools that will meet their needs. The most popular website is that of Craigslist which offers a car sharing or car pooling section. Within this section people can post an existing car pool, or a need for a ride to a specific place and users can answer them back via email.

While there are many legitamite car pools on Craigslist, it should be noted that Craigslist must be used with caution. Always make sure that you know and trust the individual whom you are car pooling with before agreeing to take the ride. You can find a great car pool, but like all things on the Internet, use caution before using.

Craigslist has made car pooling at various time a bit more convinent. Individuals who have a similar schedule but might not work in the same building are given an oppertunity to meet up and share rides to work. It’s just another case of how the Internet has made life a little bit simpler.
