Carpooling, which was basically unheard of a decade ago, is now a buzzword for savvy savers. Rising gas prices have dictated a change in the way we use our vehicles. Carpooling is now widely used in many communities and it has grown in popularity.

While you might initially be put off at the idea of riding with strangers, this is a great way to meet new people. It is also a good way to help someone who doesn’t own a car but is willing to chip in for gas and other incidentals.

Here are a few steps you can take to find a service in your area:

  • Post questions on chat rooms and in Instant Messaging services. The people you connect with online often have information and may belong to online communities dedicated to saving money.
  • Check online directories like Canada 411 and local Yellow Pages. These helpful web pages are created to help people who want to carpool. They are usually equipped with detailed maps, tips and advice for those new to this way of traveling.
  • Search for group specific carpooling services. Students are usually on the lookout for ways to save money on gas. Some services are open only to students of universities or other institutions.

The recent hike in gasoline prices is indeed a cause of concern and going by reports from various sources such as the internet and electronic media, the day might not be very far away when the world would have exhausted its entire reserves of crude oil and gas. Under such circumstances, we need to find alternate sources of energy such as windmill, electric cars, or hybrid sources of energy. Finding people to carpool with can be very easy!  There are many methods you can use to get your friends or find new people to share a ride with any day or time of the week!
