The Magic of Your Owner’s Manual: Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Pull It Out

When you purchased that new (or new to you) car, there is one thing that is worth its weight in gold: the owner’s manual. While it may not seem like the most riveting reading, be sure not to lose this little book. For those of you who have never even cracked open this magic manual, or may have lost it in the tumult of your garage, find it right away. Dig through those piles, and flip through a few pages. Here are some of the benefits to uncover.

It’s not written in Ancient Greek. – Luckily, you don’t need to be a mechanical genius to understand what is described in the owner’s manual. The writers do a good job of making the information understandable, and include many pictures and tables in addition to the written descriptions of parts and procedures.

It can tell you what that knob actually does. – Lately, our cars have begun to look like spaceships. All those knobs and buttons can get confusing.  Luckily, the owner’s manual will often have a picture and label for each display part. Maybe you’ve never been able to turn on and off a certain light. Crack open that owner’s manual, and the mystery can be solved.

It can tell you which bulb of the 120 currently facing you in the store to buy. – Replacing a headlight or taillight is a fairly easy process (the directions for which you can also find in the owner’s manual), but things could be significantly less successful if you purchase the wrong bulb. Your owner’s manual will give you the specific bulb number that your car takes, and keep that lost and bewildered look off your face.

Next time your headlight or taillight goes out, pull out that owner’s manual, look up what bulb you need, follow the directions for replacing it, and then bask in the feeling of automotive accomplishment once you successfully replace it yourself.

Low-Tech Ways to Entertain the Kids on Long Car Trips

There are so many devices that you can use to keep your kids quiet and busy during long car trips. You can hook your kids up with handheld games, wireless Internet devices, MP3 players, and portable DVD players. While these tools entertain, they also isolate your kids from each other and from you. If you’d like to entertain your kids in a way that engages the entire family, here are a few options.

Play travel bingo. You can create your own bingo cards or order them. You and the kids will be looking for stuff along the roadway. As you identify a thing, building, or animal that’s on your card, cover that space. When you have all the spaces in a row covered, you yell “Bingo!”
License plate games. Older kids will enjoy keeping a running list of the different license plates you see along the way. Take along a map and mark off each state when you see a car with that state’s plates. You can even buy maps and stickers that are made for this game.
Storytelling fun. Mom or dad can start this game by telling a fun story. The story can get started with only two or three lines. Then, the next person picks up the story and adds a few details. This game requires your kids to be good listeners and to be creative.
Catch. When you come to a rest stop, make sure you have a ball so you can play catch. This will allow you and your kids to stretch and engage in some physical activity before returning to the confines of the car.
Paper, pencils, and crayons. For children who don’t get carsick looking down, having the chance to draw and color can be a welcome distraction. A new coloring book is an inexpensive and fun gift for your trip. Have your children share their creations at the next rest stop.

Ways to Keep Kids Amused While Taking a Road Trip

Every family at one point tries to take a road trip in their car. Depending on the age of the children involved it can be a massive undertaking that the family goes through. There is the risk of the kids getting bored, having to take hundreds of bathroom breaks and other problems that can arise when you are trying to take a road trip.

As a parent there are a few things that you can do to minimize the risk for having these types of problems arise.

1. Take frequent bathroom breaks/stops. You don’t need to stop every 10 minutes or so but stopping frequently and having the children get out of the car is the best way to avoid multiple bathroom breaks. If you have the child go just because they stopped will minimize the amount of bathroom breaks you face down along the road.

2. Use portable DVD players and CD players. Having some form of entertainment for your children will help you avoid any of those disasterous fights that children are famous for. Portable DVD players allow children to watch movies or TV shows that they normally would outside of the car and will keep them occupied. Who knows they could fall asleep and be silent while they are watching the movie.

3. Car Bingo. This is an old time favorite game that is played by many children when they go on a road trip. Car bingo allows children to have boards that have various objects that they will see on the trip. When they see it they mark it off and the winner is the person who gets a bingo for seeing the items in a row. It’s a fun game that can be a great bonding experience as well as helping the children make a lot of memories.

There’s a smart phone application for sharing a cab?

There is now an application for smart phones to share a cab.

In New York City, there are over 13,000 taxis. In terms of car services, there are approximately 40,000. Some of these services are necessary for some neighborhoods that have no taxis passing through them. However, one of the problems is that these cars carry one person at a time. This means a lot of people stuck on the streets, having trouble flagging down a taxi in New York.

A solution has come about that can be an effective method of transit while cutting down on fuel waste and gas emissions from cars. In the world of smart phones, a new application can help build towards that.

Weeels is an application that can allow residents of New York to call and share a cab. The program allows commuters to simply find a taxi and in a quick manner. This can also help the drivers make more profit and waste less time. Wheels uses social networking along with the chance to use a scarce resource more efficiently.

The hope of Weeels is to change private vehicles into something closely resembling public transit. Sharing taxicabs is a trend starting to catch in other places in the world like London and have been successful.

Weeels is trailing their application with car service companies and have already received strong feedback from riders and drivers. The efficiency and ease of the program have satisfied both parties.

With the bad economy, the constant worry about the environment, and the need to get to a location promptly with limited disruptions, Weeels can be successful. Using social media and Internet tools may limit our social capabilities, but with this program, people can actually talk to someone they’ve never seen before. Weeels has a chance to be the next efficient application with these tough times.
